A former Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, has called for a deliberate attempt to enhance private sector participation to improve Ghana’s health systems.
According to him, a collaboration between private and public sector can help expand access, increase range of services and better health outcomes.
“We believe that the private sector is the engine of growth, and we need the private sector to join the public sector to improve the health systems of this country to achieve quality universal health coverage.”
“The private sector in this country is very, very important,” he stated in a media briefing to climax the Ghana Health Market Tour, which assembled experts from the continent and across the world.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare noted that the involvement of the private sector will supplement healthcare efforts in the public health system, which has over the years been riddled with limitations such as limited resources.
He is confident Ghana can grow to become the hub for medical tourism in the sub-region.
“I am very happy that we’ve come together today; we’ve been looking at health systems in the country and how we can position ourselves as a country to become the medical tourism hub of the sub-region.”
Dr. Nsiah-Asare commended the organisation of the Ghana Health Market Tour, saying “the Ghana Health Market Tour is something some of us have been looking forward to over the years.”
“The reason for this tour is to make sure that the private sector becomes very important in the health of this country. So, I am happy,” he reckoned.
Other participants of the event which was hosted in Accra shared their experiences.
“This has been an excellent conference and an excellent market tool, and I’ve gotten the chance to meet several people in various sectors, particularly in healthcare. I have found that there are endless opportunities and how we can advance healthcare here in Ghana and across the continent,” Valmy Karemera, Director, Global Partnerships, CallCare24.
“The Tour has opened up new opportunities for partnerships and new business modules that are ideal for the Ghana Market,” Norah Magero, Co-Founder and CEO, Drop Access, Kenya.
“It’s been exciting attending this programme, and going to visit health practitioners and health service delivery partners in Ghana to understand the market a lot more,” Sosthenes Konutsey, Country Manager, Bima.
