A Private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, says the approach adopted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the attempted arrest of Assin South Lawmaker Rev John Ntim Fordjour is not appropriate.
Mr Brako-Powers says it’s extremely dangerous to allow national security operatives to run riot, wielding live arms in the neighbourhood.
“This is not a sensible, reasonable, and appropriate response to Ntim Fordjour’s claims. John Dramani Mahama’s goodwill will soon dry up, sooner than we thought. It’s extremely dangerous to allow national security operatives to run riot, wielding live arms in the neighbourhood. I’m surprised a government that claims to care about the safety of Ghanaians will sanction such an irresponsible raid of a lawmaker’s residence,” he wrote on Facebook.
He further stated that “If such raids had occurred during the reign of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the many spurious allegations NDC lawmakers and party executives made at the time, we would not be this incensed. The way the armed national security personnel lined up in Ntim Fordjour’s neighbourhood, scaring his neighbours and their demeanour, paint a bad picture of Mahama as an extremely intolerant leader.
“It’s as though Ntim Fordjour is the criminal here, instead of focusing on probing the allegations he made and parrying same to the satisfaction of Ghanaians. If you need him to support your investigation of the allegations, you don’t approach it like he is a criminal. Be civilised and let common sense be your guidepost. I am unsure Mahama is about getting to the bottom of these allegations. Ultimately, it’s politics as usual for Mahama and his appointees, nothing more. ”
On Wednesday, April 9, officials of the National Intelligence Bureau attempted to arrest Ntim Fordjour in his home over the aircraft with drugs pronouncement.
According to Government Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the standoff erupted because Rev Fordjour refused to cooperate.
“NIB officials are currently at Ntim Fordjour’s residence. They have an arrest warrant. He is refusing to cooperate. They have given him time to cooperate, failing which they will act,” he said.
