All nine traffic lights in Kasoa, the capital of the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, are not functioning.
The situation is posing significant danger to pedestrians and motorists.
There have already been several pedestrian crashes including school children at intersections such as Walantu, High Tension on the Kasoa-New Market Road and the Obom road.
Rear-end collisions at the CP and Opeikuma junctions on the Kasoa-Winneba stretch is also common.
Emmanuel Mensah, a volunteer traffic warden at the Walantu junction told 3News.com that “five basic school children have been knocked down by vehicles. As for the aged I can’t tell the specific number of them, but I’ve seen some of them using clutches after surviving crashes”.
“The traffic lights have been off for close to four years and it’s a matter of urgency for the government to have it fixed,” he told 3News.
The situation at the High-Tension junction on the Obomu and New Market roads are not too different. Benjamin, a taxi driver said “there’s been crashes and we’re always faced with danger because it’s confusing. Some drivers speed while approaching the intersection”.
“Attitudes of traders who have covered some traffic lights with their sheds and also occupying pedestrian walkways” according to Baba, a pedestrian is also a matter of concern.
A former assemblyman for Odupongkpehe Zongo, a community in the Central Business District of Kasoa where all seven traffic lights have malfunctioned, John Eduah, said “the issue of traffic lights is a matter of concern to all of us and authorities need to address it. The incoming MCE must also decongest the CBD and clear traders of the road and sidewalks”.
Relatedly, the Kasoa to the Tollboth stretch of the N1 highway has no speed reduction and traffic movement regulation infrastructure.
Motorists and pedestrians are always in danger according to the police MTTD.
Information sourced from the Ngleshie Amanfro District Police Command revealed that close to ten motorists and pedestrians suffer crashes in a matter of a week.
Popular and most used bus stops such as Amanfro, Brigade, Kalabule and Galilea have no infrastructure to aid safe pedestrian crossing.
Titi, a survivor of two crashes on the stretch begged “authorities to install traffic signals and other features to protect pedestrians”.
