In the Western North Region, two District Chief Executives (DCEs) have been confirmed in Sefwi Bodi and Sefwi Akontombra Districts.
Mr. Stephen Baidoo was confirmed for the Bodi District, while Mr. Joseph Appiah was confirmed for Akontombra.
Speaking at the confirmation ceremony, the Western North Regional Minister, Hon. Willbert Petty Bretum, congratulated the newly confirmed DCEs on their appointments and urged them to prioritize the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which he described as a major security threat in the region.
He emphasized that the President has consistently warned government appointees to avoid any involvement in illegal mining and cautioned against condoning such activities.
“The DCEs must go all out to tackle this menace while also promoting responsible small-scale mining,” Hon. Bretum stated. “Licensed operators must adopt best practices to distinguish themselves from illegal miners who are destroying our forests and water bodies.”
The Minister added that the challenge of illegal mining would be one of the most significant issues the DCEs will face in their new roles and encouraged them to be firm and dedicated in their efforts.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Stephen Baidoo, the DCE for Bodi, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Assembly Members for their overwhelming endorsement. He praised the potential of the people in the Bodi District and called for unity to drive development.
“My administration will focus on improving education, healthcare, agriculture, employment, infrastructure, and security,” Mr. Baidoo said. He also acknowledged the work of his predecessor and pledged to build upon those achievements.
Mr. Joseph Appiah, the newly confirmed DCE for Akontombra, also expressed his commitment to development despite the numerous challenges facing the district. He noted that several projects left uncompleted by the previous administration, including poor roads, healthcare, and school infrastructure, remain key concerns.
He highlighted the importance of the District Assembly Common Fund as a crucial source of development funding and mentioned that part of the fund had been committed to the procurement of DRIP equipment, which would be deducted over time.
Mr. Appiah pledged to do his best to ensure development across Akontombra and called on citizens to support him with dedication and collective effort.
“In conclusion, with commitment and unity, we can transform Akontombra,” he said.
