In a significant operation aimed at curbing illegal cross-border activities, the Bunkprugu Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service has successfully intercepted twenty-five bags of cocoa beans being smuggled from Kauk-Jago, a border community, to Togo.
This operation underscores the ongoing commitment of the Ghana Immigration Service to combat smuggling in the region.
According to a detailed letter released by the Bunkprugu Sector Command, the interception occurred around 22:00 hours as officers acted on a credible tip-off regarding the illicit smuggling operation.
The Officer in Charge (OIC), along with his Operations Commander, swiftly mobilized a specialized team of eight officers to the Kauk area to set up an effective ambush.
During the operation, Immigration Officers apprehended two unregistered ‘motor kings’ that were transporting the twenty-five bags of cocoa beans. The letter confirmed that the Ghana Immigration Service has since handed over the confiscated goods to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Bunkprugu sector for further processing and investigation.
The suspects involved in this smuggling operation have been arrested and are currently in custody, awaiting further questioning to assist in the investigation.
Authorities are working diligently to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network and prevent future illegal activities along the border. This interception is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in the North East Region, aiming to strengthen border security and protect the integrity of Ghana’s trade.
The Ghana Immigration Service continues to urge the public to report any suspicious activities to help combat smuggling and related crimes in the area.
