The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), through its Western Regional Secretariat, has called on all Assembly Members across the region’s 14 districts to expedite the confirmation of the President’s nominees for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
In an official communication dated April 4, 2025, the Western Regional Representative of NALAG, Percy Ahenakwah, stressed that the delay in confirming the nominees could have dire consequences on local governance, development, and the welfare of citizens in the region.
He explained that the nominations were made by President John Mahama after extensive consultations in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
“MMDCEs are at the heart of local governance. Their responsibilities in education, healthcare, infrastructure, sanitation, and economic growth are indispensable,” Mr Ahenakwah stated. “Without a substantive MMDCE in place, these critical functions will be hampered, leading to stagnation of development and weakened governance at the local level.”
He further noted that the government’s new allowance package for Assembly Members, announced in the 2025 Budget and scheduled for implementation by the end of April, may not materialize if substantive MMDCEs are not in office.
“This may not be materialized in this month as promised by the Minister when substantive MMDCEs are not in place,” he emphasized, drawing a direct link between confirmation delays and potential financial setbacks for Assembly Members.
The statement urged members to put community interest above political differences, saying, “NALAG is appealing to all assembly members to prioritize the well-being of our communities above political differences or procedural obstacles.”
In conclusion, Mr Ahenakwah underscored the need for stability in local administration, urging all Assembly Members to work together in confirming the President’s nominees. “MMDAs cannot afford administrative uncertainties. We must focus on the crucial task of advancing development and improving the quality of life for our people.”
The appeal comes at a time when various assemblies across the country are preparing to either confirm or reject nominees, a process that often encounters political tension.
