
The Minister of Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has proposed new immigration policies to generate revenue for Ghana.
The Interior Minister disclosed that “Ghana will soon commercialize its residency permit system to generate revenue.”
He mentioned the increasing number of foreign nationals residing in Ghana without making significant contributions to the economy. “8,000 Indians and 7,000 Chinese applied for residence permit in Ghana,” he disclosed.
Alhaji Muntaka made these remarks during a meeting with Christian community leaders in Kumasi as part of his two-day working tour and stakeholder engagement.
He also interacted with Muslim Leaders and Zongo Chiefs to foster collaboration and promote peace, social cohesion and security as well as leveraging on their influence in promoting national harmony.
The Minister began his two-day working tour to the region on April 3, with the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council where he called on the Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.
The Asawase MP later met the Ashanti Regional Security Council in a closed-door meeting.
Addressing security concerns, in the country at separate meeting with the Ashanti Christian community leaders, the Interior Minister pointed out that the employment and licensing of private security personnel require urgent reforms.
He observed that many individuals are hired without proper background checks, creating potential risks for public safety.
He proposed that private security agencies should follow a standardized certification process to guarantee that only qualified individuals are allowed to work in security roles.
“This move will improve national security and ensure that private security officers are adequately trained,” he said.
“I want to reassure the Region of my dedication to working closer together to ensure crime doesn’t go unchecked in the region,” he assured.
Since taking office, Mubarak Muntaka has been engaging key stakeholders to promote national unity, foster a shared purpose to strengthen peace and security across the country.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, commended the Interior Minister for his firm approach in tackling crime, particularly in dealing with criminal gangs that have been targeting mobile money vendors in the region.
He reassured residents that the government remains committed to maintaining law and order, tackling illegal mining, and addressing the issue of unregulated foreign activities in the region.
