Health officials at the Beposo CHPS Compound are urgently calling for the facility to be renovated and upgraded into a health center to improve healthcare delivery to residents.
The call is premised on ever growing population of the community leading to a significant increase in Outpatient Department cases, thus overwhelming the CHPS compound, which was originally designed to provide basic healthcare services.
Built in 2016, the facility was primarily intended for antenatal care and first-aid treatment for a small number of patients. However, it now serves a much larger population, including residents from Komenda Edina Eguafo, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, and Wassa East, especially on Fridays due to economic activities in the area.
Midwifery Officer, Elizabeth Koomsoon, lamented the current state of the facility, stating that its limited space and lack of proper infrastructure do not support quality healthcare delivery.
“The facility is not equipped to handle the increasing number of cases, and we also struggle with regular water supply due to the ongoing water crisis in the community,” she said.
She further revealed that the CHPS compound lacks sufficient beds, adding, “As a matter of fact, we don’t even have separate wards. There is only one room designated as a ward, and it is used by both male and female patients.”
Aside from the lack of medical resources, the road leading to the facility is in poor condition, making access difficult, especially during the rainy season.
“The staircase to the facility is also a major challenge for pregnant women. They struggle to climb it to receive healthcare services,” Koomson added.
Again, the facility lacks staff accommodations, forcing health officials to live far from the center, hence disrupting their schedules and impacting healthcare delivery.
The challenges facing the Beposo CHPS compound bring to light the broader healthcare concerns in the Shama Municipality.
Despite being the gateway to the Western Region, the municipality lacks well-equipped healthcare facilities.
The Municipality has one Heath Center which is confronted with myriad of challenges.
Attempts by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government to build a hospital for the municipality did not materialize, leaving residents to patronize CHPS compounds which by their make provide limited health care services for residents in the municipality.
To this end, upgrading the Beposo CHPS Compound into a health center would significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the municipality, ensuring residents have access to better medical services.
