The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has declared that criminal investigations will soon commence to ascertain the whereabouts of the 1,328 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) which have gone missing at the Tema Harbour.
He posted this on Facebook on March 26.
“Criminal investigations will be launched immediately, and the perpetrators will surely be prosecuted,” he declared.
Mr Jinapor disclosed that during the transition process, the team from the erstwhile NPP administration stated that about 3,000 ECG containers were stuck at the Tema Harbour due to the company’s inability to pay for clearance.
He noted however that upon visiting the port, he was informed that the containers are 2,500 and their continued stay at the port had incurred demurrage to the tune of GHS1,500,000,000.
The Minister therefore decided to establish an investigative committee to find out where the remaining containers are.
“The committee’s report, which was presented to me, confirmed that over 1,300 containers were indeed missing—contrary to the narrative given by the previous administration,” Mr Jinapor stated.
Describing the findings as highly concerning, the Minister emphasised the need for accountability and swift action.
It would be recalled that an investigative report on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) uncovered that more than 1,300 containers, which were meant to be cleared at the Tema Port, are unaccounted for.
According to Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, chairman of the investigative committee, ECG initially claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment. However, an independent audit at the port found only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,347 missing.
The findings were presented to the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, who described the situation as alarming. He assured that a full-scale investigation, involving the Attorney General and the Police, would be conducted to track down the missing containers or recover their monetary value.
