Benjamin Asare, the 32-year-old goalkeeper from Accra Hearts of Oak, has made a strong case for the inclusion of local players in the national team. Asare, who recently made his debut for the Black Stars in the March internationals, believes that local players deserve a chance to showcase their talents if they are performing well.
Asare’s statement comes on the back of his impressive performance for Ghana in the World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper kept two clean sheets, helping Ghana to secure six precious points and extend their lead at the top to five points.
In an exclusive interview with 3Sport’s Mutala Yakubu in Morocco, the former Great Olympics goalkeeper believes that local players deserve a chance to showcase their talents if they are performing well.
” I am happy with the confidence they have in me and the support. I am happy that I lived up to their expectation. If a local player is good, he deserves a platform. Sometimes people think once you are a local player, the national team will be difficult, but we are very determined.”
Asare’s journey to the top has not been easy. Despite being 32, he received his first national team call-up only recently. However, his determination and hard work have paid off, and he is now an integral part of the Black Stars.
Ghana has a rich history of producing talented local players, including the likes of Richard Kingston, George Owu, and Sammy Adjei. Asare’s emergence is a testament to the fact that there is still a wealth of talent in the local league.
As Ghana continues its World Cup qualifying campaign, Asare’s experience and leadership will be crucial.
His story serves as an inspiration to young players in the local league, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
As Asare’s star continues to rise, Ghanaian football fans will be eagerly watching his progress, hoping that he will continue to make a significant impact on the national team.
