The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has called for increased transparency in national security operations, arguing that the excessive secrecy is contrary to democratic principles.
He said this on TV3’s KeyPoints on March 22.
“I agree that the days when national security operators acted and everything was shrouded in secrecy, and they are not supposed to be disclosing certain things, runs contrary to the democratic principles of transparency,” Prof Gyampo stated.
He further advocated for a periodic briefing to the nation on security actions, explaining that such transparency would prevent misinformation and baseless rumors.
“To prevent the peddling of rumors that sometimes would cast a government in the bad light, I believe that it’s important that the national security rethinks its operations to include an aspect that makes it interface with the public,” he suggested.
Professor Ransford Gyampo has emphasized the importance of fairness and national unity in pursuing justice, cautioning against an approach that could create division.
“Every act of national sabotage must be confronted. But in doing so, we must be lawful, we must be fair, and we must be exhibiting some fairness in a manner that addresses what is wrong but keeps us together as a nation,” he advised.
He called for investigations and prosecutions where necessary but urged that they should be conducted without the perception of political vendetta.
“If people have stolen, if people are sabotaging the national agenda, we should confront them frontally and make sure they are brought to book. But let us do it in such a way that it will not be seen as being overly vindictive, or it will not polarize us too much,” he warned.
