Security Analyst Col. Festus Aboagye (Rtd) has raised concerns about the increasing politicization of national security issues in Ghana.
Speaking on The KeyPoints on March 22, he stated that “these events are being politicized” rather than being framed within a national security context.
According to him, the use of terms such as “raids” in describing security operations is misleading.
“A raid is a sudden attack,” he explained, adding that historically, raids involved sudden, unannounced incursions, unlike what transpired in the recent national security operation.
He emphasized that the operation was conducted within a legal framework that allows security institutions to act based on intelligence.
Col. Aboagye pointed out that the Deputy Attorney-General had confirmed the acquisition of a court warrant for the operation, which legally justified the security intervention.
“We need to assume and give him the benefit of the doubt,” he remarked, asserting that the legality of the operation was settled.
However, he noted that discussions should focus on other aspects, such as execution and best practices.
He further highlighted that security operations should ideally involve constitutionally recognized institutions.
“If there were police elements, they should have come from the Ghana Police Service,” he said, adding that any additional support, such as military or customs officers, should have been mobilized according to the specific nature of the case.
