Sudan’s desire to qualify for the World Cup is an open secret, often echoed by Ignatius Osei-Fosu, who is assistant to Kwesi Appiah, the head coach.
“It’s Kwesi Appiah’s dream to qualify Sudan for the World Cup,” Ignatius Osei-Fosu told Sporty FM earlier in March.
Kwesi Appiah is no stranger to the World Cup after he became the first Ghanaian coach to lead the Black Stars to the 2014 continental showpiece.
His achievement was well received back home despite Ghana’s early exit in the competition.
But in Khartoum, his legend continues to rise.
Despite taking up an enormous task in October 2023, Sudan have lost just two of their last 10 competitive games, winning five and drawing three.
Appiah came back to haunt Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, picking up four points out of a possible six against the Black Stars, guiding Sudan to the AFCON for the first time since 2021.
In the World Cup qualifiers, his side have been a torn in the flesh of heavyweights Senegal and DR Congo.
Sudan have never qualified for the World Cup and fancy their chances this time.
The country has not had so much belief in their football since winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 1970 like they do now.
Sudan lie at the summit of their World Cup qualifying group with 10 points, same as DR Congo, who have played a game more, and two more than Senegal, who they face on Saturday.
Despite being ravaged by war, Kwesi Appiah has given Sudanese a renewed sense of belief, and qualifying for the World Cup could further cement his legendary status.
