The management of the National Identification Authority (NIA) has criticised employees engaged in illicit and corrupt practices including extortion and solicitation of unauthorized benefits and gifts from applicants seeking registration and related services.
The NIA said it has received allegations about these acts from the public.
Management in a statement on March 18, 2025 condemned the corrupt practices describing them as “unlawful, unethical and a direct violation of public service principles.”
“Management wishes to inform the public that allegations have been made regarding certain staff members’ involvement in extortion and solicitation of unauthorized benefits and gifts from applicants seeking registration and related services,” the statement noted.
NIA assured the public that measures are being instituted to address this issue in accordance with the Human Resource Management Policy and Manual for the Ghana Public Services.
The statement added that there will be strict enforcement of disciplinary measures against any staff member found engaging in extortion, unethical behaviour, or any unapproved conduct.
NIA stated that persons found culpable of such acts will face severe disciplinary action, including suspension, dismissal, and possible legal prosecution under the laws of Ghana.
Management urged the public to report any instances of misconduct, extortion, or unethical behaviour and assured that all complaints will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate legal action will be taken.
NIA says the following measures are being enforced to deal with corrupt practices amongst employees:
- Zero tolerance for Corruption – Public officers are strictly prohibited from soliciting or accepting bribes, payments, gifts, favours, or any form of inducement from applicant or the public in exchange for the performance their official duties.
- Fair and Transparent Service Delivery – Every applicant is entitled to receive services without undue influence, coercion, or exploitation. Staff members are required to adhere strictly to standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and approved fee structures.
“The trust of the public is paramount, and any attempt to exploit applicants or the general public for personal gain will not be tolerated. Management remains committed to ensuring that all applicants receive service in a fair, transparent, and ethical manner,” the statement added.
“The public is encouraged to report any staff who misconducts him/her self in the discharge of their duties on our Contact Centre number 0302999309.”
