Anti-graft campaigner, Edem Senanu has asserted that with the ongoing legal battle between the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, the latter is not prepared to show up for questioning in relation to corruption-related offences as requested by the OSP.
Speaking on Ghana Tonight on March 17, Edem Senanu questioned why Ofori-Atta would be engaged in a legal tussle with the OSP when he had indicated that he is seeking medical attention outside the jurisdiction due to severe medical crisis, the reason he has not been able to honour the OSP’s invite.
The former finance minister has sued the Special Prosecutor and his office for unlawfully declaring him a wanted person in February 2025.
The lawsuit, filed on March 13, 2025, at the Accra High Court, after the OSP had removed Ofori-Atta from its wanted list seeks compensation and a declaration that the OSP’s actions violated his fundamental human rights.
But Edem Senanu believes that with this action taken by the former finance minister, Ofori-Atta gives the impression that he is not willing to show up for questioning.
“It is very intriguing that somebody who was told to be in medical crisis to the extent that he is not able to show up is suddenly in court with two cases with his lawyers chasing the Special Prosecutor with an issue that under normal circumstances ought to be left lying whiles you pursue your health issues and make sure you are okay.
“Something doesn’t add up. It seems as if this is a pre-emptive strike. The optics appear as if somebody who is really not committed to showing up. Otherwise, if you have a health crisis would you be pursuing court cases at this time.
“This is intriguing to say the least and leaves the impression that Mr. Ofori-Atta is really not committed to showing up,” he explained.
Ofori-Atta’s lawyers have indicated to the OSP that the former finance minister will arrive in the jurisdiction by June 2 to answer questions relating to alleged corruption offenses.
The OSP has also issued a stern caution to Ken Ofori-Atta that he will be re-listed as a wanted person should he fail to appear for questioning on 2nd June 2025 deadline.
