Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama not to repeat what he describes as the mistakes of the former NPP government by removing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
According to Mr. Bentil, Dr. Dampare has been diligent and professional in the execution of his duties and must be retained under the new administration.
Taking to his Facebook page following reports of plans to remove the IGP, Mr. Bentil cautioned President Mahama against repeating what he called the wrongful removal of former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo, by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“We should try not to become what we criticized before. Domelevo was sacked for doing his job! The Supreme Court ruled it as wrong. What has the IGP done, except doing his job very well? I hope the NDC won’t repeat the evils of the NPP!” he wrote.

He further noted that IMANI had filed a case at the Supreme Court regarding the dismissal of security chiefs and that the Court is expected to rule on May 7, 2025, on whether security chiefs, including the IGP, can be dismissed without cause.
“The government should respect the rule of law and wait for the ruling of the Court,” he stressed.
Mr. Bentil reiterated his position, saying, “This IGP has been great at his job and should have been retained for all our sakes. But even if President Mahama wants to repeat the mistakes of the NPP, he should at least signal that he accepts the rule of law and wait for the Supreme Court to rule. We hope Ghana will see the promised reset instead of repeating the sins of the NPP in worse form.”
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has served as IGP since 2021, is a career police officer with five years remaining until his retirement.
