Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has publicly reacted to the ongoing criminal investigation initiated against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), expressing deep frustration and confusion over recent developments.
In an open letter dated February 26, 2025, Ofori-Atta said he was “puzzled and dismayed” by the actions of the Special Prosecutor, particularly the raid on his home and the public declaration labeling him a “fugitive from justice.”
Ofori-Atta explained that he had been out of the country on medical grounds since January 24, 2025, when the OSP invited him for an in-person meeting scheduled for February 10, 2025, in relation to four corruption and corruption-related cases.
According to the former minister, he was neither the originating nor implementing minister in any of the portfolios under investigation.
“I immediately responded through my lawyers, indicating my willingness to have them provide the Special Prosecutor with any information required to aid the investigation, given that I would be out of the country for the next few months for medical reasons,” he noted.
However, Ofori-Atta said the Special Prosecutor rejected the offer to engage through his lawyers, insisting on a fixed date for his personal appearance.
Despite informing the OSP of his medical leave abroad, armed National Security operatives raided Ofori-Atta’s home on February 11, 2025.
The Special Prosecutor later claimed that Ofori-Atta had “staged the raid on his own home” and launched an international campaign branding him as a “fugitive from justice.”
Ofori-Atta indicated that the Majority Leader has since apologized on the floor of Parliament for the raid on his home, and the OSP has rescinded the “fugitive” declaration, now proposing a meeting in June.
Despite this, Ofori-Atta expressed hope that the Special Prosecutor would agree to meet with his legal team well before June to resolve the issue expeditiously, especially as the number of cases under investigation has now reportedly risen to five.
