After a brief hiatus of the Ghana Premier League GPL due to the death of devoted Kotoko fan, the GPL roared back to life, with matchday 23 serving up a thrilling slate of fixtures.
Here’s a breakdown of the action:
The Phobians kicked off the weekend’s proceedings with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Young Apostles at the University of Ghana Stadium. Michael Awuah’s first-half strike set the tone, before Hamza Issah sealed the win with a second-half goal. Hearts’ dominance in possession and solid defensive display ensured they collected all three points, propelling them to third spot with 36 points.
Former champions Medeama bounced back from their disappointing MTN FA Cup showing with a resounding 3-1 triumph over Bechem United at the Tarkwa T&A Stadium. This morale-boosting win was just the tonic Medeama needed to resurge their campaign.
Berekum Chelsea sparkled with a 3-1 victory over struggling Accra Lions. The defeat condemned Lions to their fifth loss in seven matches, leaving them anchored to the foot of the table.
Asante Kotoko returned to action with a bang, dispatching Legon Cities 2-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. This win catapulted the Porcupine Warriors to the summit of the GPL, tied on 37 points with Bibiani GoldStars.
Dreams FC’s woes continued as they were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Aduana Stars at the Turba Astro Turf. This draw further entangled Dreams in the relegation dogfight, leaving them just three points above the drop zone.
Vision FC were unable to capitalize on home advantage, as they were pegged back by a resilient Heart of Lions in a 1-1 draw. Despite their winless streak, Lions remain in fourth spot, just three points adrift of leaders Kotoko.
Karela United’s survival bid received a boost as they shared the spoils with Holy Stars in a 1-1 draw at the Naa Sherigu Stadium. This hard-earned point was only Karela’s second in six matches, as they strive to escape the relegation quagmire.
The matchday 23 action will conclude with Nsoatreman hosting reigning champions Samartex at the Bibiani Dunes Park. The Bibiani Dunes Park will temporarily host Nsoatreman’s home matches, following the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to ban the Nsekyere Stadium in the wake of the tragic demise of Asante Kotoko fan, Nana Pooley.
