A Chinese firm, Wangkang Ceramics Company Limited, located in Eshiem, Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis, Western Region, has been issued a one-week ultimatum to cease illegal activities polluting River Anankore in Inchaban.

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, issued the ultimatum after Earnest Hoffman, an officer from the Water Resources Commission (WRC) at Ghana Water Company Limited, briefed him on the company’s violations despite prior warnings.

The company has been instructed to cease activities that are obstructing the flow and purity of River Anankore, which supplies water to Ghana Water Company Limited.

The Ghana Water Company Limited had previously reported the Chinese firm to the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) due to its refusal to comply with its directives and the Water Resources Commission.

Despite attempts to resolve the issue amicably, the Chinese company’s entrenched position has hindered progress.

Minister Nelson’s ultimatum aims to ensure the company’s activities do not compromise the operations of Ghana Water Company Limited.

He successfully brokered a peaceful resolution to the longstanding dispute on Friday, March 7, 2025. The issue at hand was the obstruction of water production and supply in the Metropolis and surrounding communities.

Minister Nelson emphasized the importance of uninterrupted water supply, ensuring the firm’s actions wouldn’t compromise it.

Consequently, he instructed the private company to immediately find an alternative way of managing its waste and also free the River Anankore from any obstructions. These, he said once carried out would allow Ghana Water Company Limited to produce and supply water without any inconveniences being created.

Again, he said pollution of the water body through activities of the ceramic company must cease henceforth. He gave the Chinese a one-week ultimatum to do the right thing and report back as determination of the matter hinges solely on their action or inaction.
