The Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) has declined to call off its strike.
Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo said this when he addressed a news conference in Accra on February 22.
The leadership of CLOGSAG and its National Executive Council took the decision not to call off the strike after a crunch meeting held earlier.
According to the leadership of the Association, they received a letter from Mr Pelpuo to call off the strike. But the Dr Bampoe Addo said that letter failed to specify the way forward.
“We got the letter, and the letter says we request you to call off your strike, that’s all, the letter doesn’t indicate any road map, where he wants to meet us, just call off the strike and this 419 business, we have seen it so we will not be fooled again,” he stated.
Dr Bampoe stressed that the strike will continue.
“We wish to state unequivocally that CLOGSAG is not against the authority of the President to appoint persons into the public services as enshrined in Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution, rather the Association is drawing the attention of government to the Supreme Court ruling that emphasises the significance of neutrality, anonymity, professionalism and permanence in the Civil Service and Local Government services. Meanwhile, NEC reiterated its position that the ongoing strike should continue,” he announced.
Already, the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu had indicated that President John Dramani Mahama had not flouted any law with the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Birth and Death Registry.
He was surprised that CLOGSAG did not contest the competencies of Mr Samuel Botchway.
But Dr Bampoe Addo said, Samuel Adom Botchway, does not have the requisite credentials to head the institutions.
“When you look at the Act that Felix Kwakye Ofosu he is quoting, the President shall appoint a person having the relevant academic qualification, experience, and knowledge of that person in civil registration,” he said.
Dr Bampoe Addo explained that “Civil registration is population studies, somebody who has qualification in demography, he should tell us, and mind you I don’t know his qualification but in birth and death we have people who have PhD, and somebody walks through political corridors to come and sit on us, and he doesn’t know anything.”
