The Government of Ghana has officially announced the theme for the country’s 68th Independence Anniversary: “Reflect | Review | Reset.”
This year’s celebration will take place at Jubilee House, following President John Mahama’s directive to reduce government expenditure amid ongoing economic challenges.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the suspension of the rotational hosting policy, which had been introduced by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
He explained that hosting the event in different regions incurred significant financial burdens, referencing last year’s grand celebration in Ho, Volta Region, as an example.
“This year’s celebration will be modest and cost-effective, unlike the elaborate ceremonies traditionally held at Independence Square,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated.
The theme “Reflect, Review, Reset” emphasizes a moment of national introspection, urging Ghanaians to assess the country’s progress and forge a path toward a renewed vision for development.
Independence Day celebrations are an important annual tradition, commemorating the nation’s liberation from colonial rule on March 6, 1957. While the Jubilee House venue marks a departure from previous large-scale celebrations, government officials assure the public that the day’s historical significance will still be honoured.
