Online music streaming platform, Spotify, has recognised some prominent Ghanaian artistes as key contributors to its African love music list.
The online streaming platform on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 released its “100 Best African Love Songs” list.
King Promise, Kojo Antwi, Sarkodie, Gyakie, Bisa Kdei, Kuami Eugene, Stonebwoy and KiDi made Spotify’s list. This shows that Ghanaian artistes are some of the best producers of timeless love songs.
Notable Ghanaian songs on the list included Sarkodie’s Can’t Let You Go, Gyakie’s Forever remix ft Omah Lay, King Promise’s Selfish, KiDi’s 4Life, Kwesi Arthur’s Nobody featuring Mr Eazi, Stonebwoy’s More of You and M.anifest’s Me Ne Woa among others.
The selection shows how Ghanaian music is closely tied to emotions like love, passion, and heartbreak.
According to Spotify’s data, a surprising pattern emerged. Over the past three years, Ghanaian men made up 68 percent of listeners who streamed heartbreak music, while women accounted for 31 percent.
Interestingly, the same report mentioned that Ghana has seen a staggering 226 percent increase in demand for heartbreak songs, especially on Valentine’s Day.
This suggests that while many people celebrate love, others find solace in music during this time.
Songs by prominent Nigerian artistes were also mentioned. They included Run Town’s Mad on You, Wizkid’s Piece of my Heart, Rema’s Baby (Is it a Crime) and 2Face’s If Love is a Crime.
In July 2024, Spotify unveiled 30 Ghanaian songs making global impact in 2024 over the first half of the year.
The list recognised Ghanaian tracks that have had the most listens from outside Ghana in the first half of 2024, released between January 1 – June 30.
King Promise’s hit single Paris was recorded as Ghana’s number one international favourite at the time.
