A Tuesday evening rainstorm has brought academic activities to a temporary halt at Ninting Presby Basic School in the Mampong Municipality of Ashanti Region.
Roofs of several classrooms have been ripped off, rendering the affected infrastructure non-usable.
Teaching staff and learners remained helpless for hours when they arrived to see the extent of ruin caused to their school building.
Pupils had to spend learning hours tidying up the classrooms for temporary use.
School authorities fear that the over two hundred and fifty (250) affected students may be deprived of access to their classrooms for a long time if immediate help does not come their way.
“We do not have any temporary space to conduct effective studies. We are hoping for a quick intervention to prevent disruption of the academic calendar”, Headteacher of the school, Godfred Antwi said in an interview with 3news.com.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) were at the school to assess the extent of damage, Wednesday morning, February 19.
Assemblyman for the area, Nicholas Osei-Wusu is worried the current situation will hamper teaching and learning.
“This is an unfortunate situation, and it has come at a time the pupils are preparing for mid-term test. I’ve informed the Municipal Assembly and hoping they come to our aid soon,” he said.
Individual homes were also not spared the wrath of the storm.
Several houses in Ninting saw their roofs ripped off, destroying personal properties.
“Everything in my room has been destroyed when the roofs ripped off. I had to spend the night at a neighbour’s house. We are just looking up to government and well-meaning Ghanaians to support us”, a victim, Ama Owusuaa Appiah explained.
Until help arrives, teachers and pupils will have to improvise in the teaching and learning process.
For now, the slightest rain will mean a halt in academic activities.
