The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis has developed double pneumonia, complicating his ongoing treatment for bronchitis.
However, the 86-year-old Pontiff remains in good spirits and continues to receive medical care at the A. Gemelli Polyclinic Foundation in Rome.
In a Tuesday evening press release, the Holy See Press Office provided an update on the Pope’s condition, describing it as “complex.”
“Laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture,” the statement read.
The Vatican revealed that Pope Francis’ polymicrobial infection—arising from bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis—has required corticosteroids and antibiotics, making treatment more challenging.
A follow-up chest CT scan conducted on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating additional pharmacological therapy.
Despite his health challenges, the Vatican reassured the public that Pope Francis remains positive.
The statement also noted that throughout the day, the Pope had received the Eucharist, and spent time praying, reading, and resting. He expressed his gratitude for the support and prayers from around the world and kindly asked that the faithful continue to pray for his recovery.
The Vatican has not provided a specific timeline for the Pope’s discharge but emphasized that his condition is being closely monitored by a team of doctors and specialists.
