The Food and Agriculture Minister, Eric Opoku, has urged churches to venture into farming to feed their members and support the country’s economy in achieving food security.
According to the sector minister, it is important for the churches to mobilize their members to take advantage of the arable lands in the country to produce food stuff.
‘‘And then we are also saying that all the churches here, if the people don’t have food to eat, how can they come to church and listen to the Word of God? So we are urging the churches to also go into farming. Some of the churches are already into farming. Others can also join. We have what it takes to produce food to feed our country and the rest of West Africa. We can do it. ” he urged during a media engagement on February 14.
The Minister, in urging all Ghanaians to practice any farming method of choice, no matter how small, as a means to promote food security, believes if churches take up the initiative seriously, it will be a game changer in the government’s Feed Ghana programme.
Already, some churches especially the orthodox churches are in one way or the other engaging in farming activities in some parts of the country.
The Presbyterian Agricultural Station – Langbensi, in the northern part of the country is one of the four agricultural stations established by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Dutch missionaries to supplement government’s effort in attaining food and income security in Northern Ghana.
The development wing of the Methodist Church Ghana also pays key attention to food security, access to clean water and livelihood.
