Upper East Minister calls for holistic tourism development proposals

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has called on the regional branch of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to draft comprehensive proposals highlighting the tourism potential of the region.

This directive came during a courtesy visit by the Upper East Regional Director of the GTA, Wisdom Ahadzi, to the minister’s office. Hon. Akamugri emphasized that presenting a well-rounded portfolio of tourism sites would attract a wider range of investors, rather than focusing on a single location.

“Some investors may be interested in the Tongo Rocks, others in the slave camps, or the Tongo shrines. If you focus on only one site, expecting sponsorship, it may not materialize. However, if you present a holistic package, investors can select projects that align with their interests,” he stated.

The minister also urged the GTA to explore smaller communities across the region to identify additional sites with tourism potential. He stressed that developing these sites could generate new revenue streams to support regional development.

Hon. Akamugri further highlighted the role of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in tourism promotion and called for stronger collaboration between the GTA and local authorities. He assured that once Municipal and District Chief Executives are appointed; he would facilitate partnerships to prioritize strategic tourism initiatives.

Additionally, the minister emphasized the potential benefits of establishing an airport in the region, linking it directly to tourism growth. He expressed confidence that improved transportation infrastructure would significantly boost tourism and contribute to the region’s economic progress.

The minister’s appeal reinforces the government’s commitment to leveraging the Upper East Region’s tourism assets as a key driver of economic transformation.
