At the 38th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President John Dramani Mahama called for collective action to secure reparations for Africans and people of African descent.
Speaking at the launch of the AU’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” he emphasised the need for stronger legal and institutional mechanisms at all levels to turn justice from a mere conversation into reality.
The AU’s initiative aligns with Agenda 2063’s vision for an integrated and prosperous Africa. It aims to mobilise political will, foster partnerships, and break the silence on historical injustices, including slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and neo-colonial exploitation, which continue to fuel economic and social disparities.
President Mahama cited the Accra Reparations Conference of 2023 as a key moment in advancing advocacy and policy frameworks. He stressed that reparations require the involvement of European nations, regional bodies, the African diaspora, civil society, academia, and the private sector.
Highlighting the devastating impact of the transatlantic slave trade—where over 12.5 million Africans were forcibly displaced and millions perished—he noted that Africa has lost trillions of dollars due to colonial exploitation.
He called for urgent action to address systemic discrimination and racial prejudice, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to the reparations movement for a just and equitable future.
