Legal practitioner Edudzi Tameklo has accused former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame of dishonesty and unethical conduct over the existence of an internal memo that reportedly recommended the discontinuation of prosecution against Dr. Johnson Asiama, the acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Tameklo, alleged that Dame denied the memo’s existence despite email evidence proving otherwise.

“Godfred Dame tells the public that there was no memo asking him to discontinue the case. But there’s an email trail—how do you quote portions of a memo you claim doesn’t exist?” he challenged on The KeyPoints on February 15.

The current Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, defended his decision to drop the case against Dr Asiama, stating that a review of the evidence revealed significant weaknesses.

He explained that his reassessment uncovered an internal memo from the prosecution division of the Attorney-General’s office, which advised his predecessor, Godfred Yeboah Dame, to discontinue the case due to concerns over its strength.

“My review of some of the cases revealed fatal flaws in the prosecution’s argument. In two of the ongoing banking trials, I took the decision to withdraw charges against Mr Johnson Asiama because an internal memo had recommended this course of action,” Dr Ayine asserted.

According to Tameklo, Dame’s actions amount to deliberate deception aimed at covering up internal communications from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“He took the memo away. That’s unethical for an Attorney-General. You don’t shred memos or take them home,” he alleged.

“There is a way to catch a liar—give him more rope, and he will tie himself with it. That is what has happened to Godfred Dame,” he asserted.

The former Attorney-General, however, maintains that no such memo was presented to him.

“If there is a memo, let them produce it,” Dame contended.

With allegations and counterclaims swirling, the public awaits further developments as legal and political observers call for greater transparency in the handling of high-profile cases.
