News Ghana has officially retracted a defamatory article targeting Justina Nelson, the Acting CEO of the Minerals Income & Investment Fund (MIIF), and issued an unreserved apology for any reputational harm caused.
The online news portal had previously published an article titled “US$60M Scandal Hits Ghana’s Mining Sector,” which contained unsubstantiated allegations against MIIF and its newly appointed CEO.
After conducting a review, News Ghana acknowledged that its claims were inaccurate and misleading.
“Our reporting did not accurately convey the facts and may have presented an unbalanced account of her actions and motivations,” the portal stated. “We regret any harm or distress this story has caused Ms. Nelson.”
Justina Nelson has been the subject of several politically charged and unfounded reports by various Ghanaian media outlets. These attacks intensified following the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) announcement of an investigation into MIIF. The probe primarily focuses on financial transactions conducted under former CEO Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, including payments related to Agyapa Royalties Limited, the Small Scale Mining Incubation Programme (SSMIP), the Quarry Value Addition Programme (QVAP), and Asante Gold Corporation.
These misleading reports appear to be an attempt to link Nelson to controversies from the previous administration. However, News Ghana has admitted that allegations of financial mismanagement against her were unfounded.
“We acknowledge that Ms. Nelson acted lawfully in response to the whistleblower’s request, and our reporting did not provide an objective, well-balanced account of the situation,” the retraction read. “We regret any confusion, misunderstanding, or harm our story may have caused to her and MIIF.”
While News Ghana’s apology is a step in the right direction, Nelson has suffered significant reputational damage due to these false accusations. Other media outlets that published similar reports are urged to uphold journalistic integrity by issuing corrections and apologies. Nelson, who has only been in office for a month, has carried out her duties with professionalism, integrity, and full adherence to Ghanaian law.
