Gov’t to restore Free Fertilizer Distribution programme to enhance cocoa yields – Trade Minister

As Ghana celebrates Chocolate Day, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to revamping the cocoa sector with strategic interventions aimed at boosting production.

Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Minister Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, has announced plans to restore the free fertilizer distribution program to support cocoa farmers and enhance yields.

“We recognize the struggles farmers face due to the high cost of inputs. That is why the government is committed to bringing back free fertilizer distribution to ease their burden and improve productivity,” she said.

She also emphasized the need to secure timely funds for cocoa purchases to prevent smuggling, a major challenge facing the industry.

“When we delay in paying farmers for their produce, we create an opportunity for smuggling. The government is working to ensure that funds are readily available so that we buy cocoa on time,” she explained.

The Minister further encouraged investment in local cocoa processing, urging businesses to add value instead of exporting raw beans.

“As we celebrate cocoa, we want more people to invest in value addition. The real wealth is in processing and exporting finished products, not just raw cocoa,” she noted.

Mrs Adjare also reiterated the government’s determination to stop illegal mining, or ‘galamsey,’ which continues to threaten cocoa farms across the country.

“We cannot allow illegal mining to destroy our cocoa farms. The government is taking decisive steps to protect farmers and their livelihoods,” she assured.

Stakeholders in the cocoa sector have welcomed the initiatives, urging swift implementation to protect Ghana’s position as a leading cocoa producer.
