Security agencies in Walewale, North East Region, have confirmed the deaths of four people following a violent gun attack on a commercial bus traveling along the Walewale-Tamale highway.
According to reports, the bus was en route from Widana in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region when it was ambushed by gunmen and set ablaze near Kukua Loagri.
Three adults and an infant were burned beyond recognition.
Security officials revealed that the bus had developed a mechanical fault overnight, forcing it to stop for repairs. As the driver and conductor worked to fix the issue the next morning, armed attackers arrived, opened fire indiscriminately, and set the vehicle ablaze.
The gunmen escaped into nearby thickets before law enforcement arrived at the scene.
This attack adds to a series of violent incidents on the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway in recent weeks. Just two days ago, armed gunmen ambushed and burned another commercial bus near Wulugu, killing three people.
Although the motive behind the attacks remains unclear, security agencies suspect they are linked to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
Meanwhile, security sources in the Upper East Region have confirmed the killing of three people in Gumyoko, Binduri District, after unknown gunmen carried out another attack last night. This incident is also believed to be connected to the resurgence of violence in Bawku.
Authorities have urged travelers to remain cautious while security forces intensify patrols along high-risk routes.
