Labour Consultant, Austin Gamey has said the transition team which was set up to transition power to the Mahama administration should have been informed of recruitments and appointments by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024 elections.
Mr. Gamey explained that in any proper governance structure, the transition team would have been briefed of the processes and the qualifications including the employment and appointments of such persons into state institutions after the December 7 elections.
His assertion follows the directive by President Mahama for the annulment of all appointments made by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024
Austin Gamey noted that the politicization of the recruitments by the erstwhile administration may be the reason for the annulment by President Mahama.
“The appropriate thing would have been to let the transition team know that we began a process like this and that the people haven’t been shortlisted and interviewed by panel…we intend giving them appointment letter so we want the blessings of the transitional team.
“That is the wise approach in governance, that’s how it’s supposed to be. Unfortunately, it does appear that this was not brought to the attention of the transitional team except that it was truck on them as a surprise maybe that’s the reason why this approach is being given to it,” he said in an interview on TV3, Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
Mr. Gamey further criticised the decision by the erstwhile government to make recruitments after the December 7 elections, stating that it makes no “economic sense.”
For him, the erstwhile administration had the obligation to maintain the manpower ceiling so as not to exert pressure on the country’s finances for the next administration.
“When you have elections, you don’t recruit immediately after the elections. Your outgoing government except that it is taking power from itself then recruitment of any shape and form can take place even that it does not make economic sense that’s why you have manpower ceiling, you don’t go over the manpower ceiling.
“All the people who were recruited after the elections, what it means is that you are recruiting people who are supposed to be your favourite or the person who is coming to take over to work with them when he does not know about all that. It is not normally done,” Gamey added.
The announcement by the Office of the Presidency is likely to impact individuals who secured public sector appointments or recruitments following the 2024 general elections.
Although no official explanation has been provided for the nullification, sources indicate that it is part of the government’s initiative to promote fairness and transparency during the public sector transition.
