It does not make economic sense to appoint after elections – Labour Consultant

Labour Consultant, Austin Gamey has disagreed with former President Akufo-Addo’s appointments and recruitments of persons into state institutions after the 2024 December 7 general elections.

Mr. Gamey explained that it is not economically prudent for a government to make appointments and recruitments right after elections, especially when it is handing over power to a different government.

According to him, this strains government’s purse for the next administration as various governments have the obligation to maintain manpower ceiling in all institutions.

“When you have elections, you don’t recruit immediately after the elections. Your outgoing government except that it is taking power from itself then recruitment of any shape and form can take place even that it does not make economic sense that’s why you have manpower ceiling, you don’t go over the manpower ceiling,” he said in an interview with TV3, Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

The Labour Consultant asserts that any such act means that the one is “recruiting people who are supposed to be your favourite or the person who is coming to take over to work with them when he does not know about all that.”

“It is not normally done,” Gamey added.

His comment follows the directive by President Mahama to the Chief of Staff to nullify all appointments made by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024.

This was contained in a circular cited by 3news.com dated February 10, 2025, and addressed to all Heads of Government Institutions.

“Consistent with Government pronouncement in relation to near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December, 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles,” Mr Debrah wrote.
