The Western Region recorded a rise in road traffic crashes in 2024, with fatalities surging by 55.83%, according to statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
The report indicates that the number of deaths increased from 120 in 2023 to 187 in 2024, representing 55.83%.
However, injuries decreased by 19.21%, from 687 to 555.
The data reveals that 743 crashes were recorded between January and December 2024, marking a 5.24% increase from the 706 cases documented in 2023.
A total of 1,119 vehicles were involved in crashes last year, compared to 1,284 in 2023.
The breakdown of incidents by vehicle type showed that private vehicles accounted for the highest number of crashes (427), followed closely by commercial vehicles (423) and motorcycles/tricycles (269).
Despite the increase in crashes and fatalities, pedestrian knockdowns saw an 11.92% decrease, falling from 151 cases in 2023 to 133 in 2024.
Per the statistics commercial vehicles recorded 60 deaths and 178 injuries Private vehicles recorded 58 deaths, 207 injuries whereas motorcycles and tricycles recorded 69 deaths and 170 injuries.
The statistics also indicate that men were disproportionately affected, accounting for 83.42% (156) of all deaths, while women made up 16.58% (31). Age-wise, 83.96% (157) of those killed were above 18 years, with 16.04% (30) being minors.
The Western Region ranked fifth in the national road traffic crash report for 2024.
Victor Kojo Bilson, Western Regional Head of the NRSA, attributed the rise in crashes to the deteriorating state of major roads and the blatant disregard for road safety regulations by some drivers and riders.
“Pedestrian knockdowns remain a major concern due to the encroachment of walkways, especially in our Central Business Districts,” he told newsmen.
Bilson assured that the NRSA would intensify road safety education and enforcement operations to curb the trend and enhance safety on the region’s roads.
