Bournemouth and Blacks Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has described Ghanaians as “lovers of football.”
Semenyo has been in blistering form for Bournemouth in the 2024/25 Premier League season, scoring nine goals across all competitions for the Cherries.
The latest of Semenyo’s strikes came over the weekend when Bournemouth beat Everton 2-0 to seal their place in the FA Cup fifth round.
The ambipedal forward has been fundamental for club and country in recent years, playing starring roles.
For the Black Stars, Semenyo has been capped 25 times, scoring two goals.
The first of his 25 caps came on June 1, 2022, when Ghana played Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Since his Black Stars debut, the 25-year-old has gone on to represent Ghana in major international tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup and 2023 AFCON.
Reflecting on his 2022 World Cup experience, where he was limited to cameo appearances in two of Ghana’s three group games, Semenyo told Premier League TV.
“Pressure. It felt like pressure, to be honest. There’s a lot of pressure from the fans that we’ve got a good team, and we’ve got to do well. I agree with them, a very good team, so there was a lot of pressure behind it. I think we needed to beat Uruguay to get through. Obviously, we lost. It was just frustrating.
The former Bristol man went on to laud Ghanaians for their enthusiastic football approach.
“You look into the stands, all the fans were frustrated, angry, cussing at everyone, and that’s just the country in a nutshell. They just love football. Their week is determined on how well we do,” he added.
The Black Stars will be back in action in March, where they’ll take on Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
