The Democracy Hub has welcomed the Attorney General’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi in the case against its convenors and members who protested against illegal mining (galamsey).
However, the group insists that this does not erase the human rights abuses they endured at the hands of security forces.
In a press release dated February 7, 2025, Democracy Hub condemned the violent crackdown, illegal arrests, and alleged torture of protestors, calling for an independent and impartial inquiry into the abuses. They emphasized that those responsible—whether in the Ghana Police Service, National Security apparatus, or any state agency—must be held accountable.
“The violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrators, the illegal arrests, the inhumane detention conditions, and the torture and ill-treatment meted out to some of our comrades must not be forgotten,” the statement read.
The group extended gratitude to its legal team, Lawyers for Protest Defence, as well as allied organizations like the Economic Fighters League and #FreeTheCitizens campaigners for their unwavering support.
Democracy Hub reaffirmed its commitment to fighting galamsey and protecting democratic rights, vowing that no Ghanaian should ever be punished for demanding justice.
