The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that all withheld 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results will be released by February 28, 2025.
The Council is currently investigating alleged examination malpractices by some candidates and have withheld the results of these candidates. WAEC said it will finalize investigations into alleged malpractice and irregularities by February 28.
Speaking at a press conference at WAEC’s head office in Accra on Friday, February 7, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, said the the examination body is committed to ensure transparency in its investigations.
“The Council has continued its hearing for the affected candidates and has been releasing results as appropriate. The Council wishes to assure all stakeholders that all cases of malpractices will be finalized and also results released by February 28,” Kapi noted.
WAEC’s assurance follows the recent legal tussle over the delayed results. On January 30, 2025, the High Court ruled in favour of four students after they sued on behalf of 10,520 candidates whose results had been withheld because they were accused of engaging in exam malpractice.
The court ordered WAEC to release the affected results. However, the examination council has since filed for a stay of execution, which is scheduled to be heard on February 20.
This is to allow WAEC to finish its investigations before complying with the court’s order.
Legal counsel for the students, Martin Kpebu, argued in court that WAEC had failed to provide specific details on the alleged malpractices that led to the withholding of results.
He contended that the lack of clarity had left thousands of candidates in limbo.
