The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye, has told the government of Ghana to look more to its natural resources to fund its development.
He argues that this has become imperative due to the rapid dwindling of foreign aid.
Dr Kwakye’s comments come at a time when the Trump administration reportedly intends to close down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
President Trump intends to merge the US government’s main overseas aid agency with the State Department, as workers were asked to stay out of its Washington headquarters on Monday, February 3.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters he was now the acting head of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the agency that distributes billions of dollars in aid around the world.
In a post on his X page, Dr Kwakye said “Foreign aid is rapidly dwindling. Ghana should look more to its natural resources to fund its development.”

Also commenting on this matter, Senior Partner at Africa Legal Associates, Gabby Otchere Darko wrote on Facebook that “This is big. Imagine how many livelihoods will be affected by this. My own sister is a programme manager for one of the biggest CDC-funded HIV/TB programmes in the world in South Africa.
“She, being a medical doctor, should have no problem finding a job but what about the 1,000s trained for that programme which is currently suspended, and the many more patients whose very lives depend on them?
“That is why Africa should more than ever intensify the push to be owner of her own destiny and we, her children, financiers of our own wellbeing and dignity.”
