President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in the Constitutional Review Committee, reaffirming that the exercise is for Ghana’s progress and not tied to any political party.
The ceremony took place on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra, where the President assured the committee that their efforts would be meaningful.
“Your work will not be in vain… this is about Ghana,” President Mahama emphasized.
Chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of CDD-Ghana, the committee comprises distinguished legal scholars, political scientists, and civil society leaders tasked with reviewing Ghana’s Constitution. They have six months to complete their work.
Their mandate includes identifying gaps in past review efforts, engaging stakeholders, and proposing reforms to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
President Mahama underscored the importance of the review, stating, “This process must not become another chapter in unfulfilled reform efforts. It must be a turning point.”
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Professor Prempeh pledged their dedication to the task, promising to work diligently for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
The committee includes Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Professor Kwame Karikari, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, Dr. Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, Dr. Esi Ansah, and Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya, who will serve as Secretary.
As the committee embarks on its mission, President Mahama urged them to engage widely with the public, ensuring that the Constitution reflects the aspirations of all Ghanaians.
The committee is expected to submit its recommendations by July 2025, paving the way for significant constitutional reforms to shape the future of Ghana’s governance.
