A-G urges constitutional review cttee members to perform their duties excellently

The Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine has told members of the constitutional review committee to do their work diligently.

He indicated that the members were carefully selected because of their expertise.

“You have been carefully selected for this important work on behalf of our country. The easier part of the job is to follow the prescribed method for altering the constitution.

“The more challenging aspect, and I can say this without fear of contradiction, is to recommend substantive provisions to add to or replace elements of the current constitution,” he said during the swearing in of the members by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday Janury 30.

For his part, President Mahama said that the work of the Constitutional Review Committee is about Ghana, not the interest of any political party.

He also assured that the exercise will not be an exercise in futility.

“Your work will not be in vain, this will not be an exercise in futility…this exercise is not about any political party, it is about Ghana,” he said.

The committee which has six months to finish its work starting today Thursday, January 30, 202,5 is chaired by the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD- Ghana) Professor H Kwasi Prempeh.

The committee comprises legal scholars, political scientists, and civil society leaders, all recognized for their expertise and commitment to good governance.    

The committee is tasked with identifying gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional review efforts, engaging with stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives, and formulating actionable recommendations to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions and processes.    

President Mahama emphasized the importance of the committee’s work, stating, “This review is crucial to ensuring that our Constitution remains a living document, responsive to the evolving needs and aspirations of our people.“

The committee comprises the following.

1. Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman
2. Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member
3. Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member
4. Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member
5. Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member
6. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member
7. Dr. Esi Ansah – Member
8. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary

President Mahama expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver comprehensive and impactful recommendations within the five-month timeframe.    

The committee’s recommendations are expected to shape significant constitutional reforms in the years to come.
