The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has overhauled the Black Stars’ technical team following an extensive review of the team’s performance during last year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON following a poor qualifying campaign which saw the Black Stars record no win.
The experienced German manager Winfried Anton Schäfer, a 2002 AFCON-winning coach with Cameroon, has been named the Technical Advisor of the Black Stars.
Schäfer, who also takes on the role of Director of Football for the GFA, will collaborate closely with Head Coach Otto Addo to build a formidable team.
The veteran tactician brings over 40 years of coaching experience across national teams, including Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, as well as European clubs like Borussia Mönchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, and VfB Stuttgart.
Joining the technical setup as assistant coach is Desmond Ofei, credited with revitalizing Ghana’s U-20 side. The 2024 SWAG Coach of the Year and African Games gold medal-winning coach will bring his analytical expertise and a fresh perspective to the senior team.
Belgian sports psychologist Kris Perquy, with 17 years of experience, also joins the team. Perquy was instrumental in enhancing the football psychology framework in Belgium and has worked with professional clubs and the Belgian FA.
Additionally, Gregory De Grauwe, a UEFA License B coach and video analyst, will lead the team’s video analysis unit. De Grauwe has a strong background in physical education and analysis, having worked with clubs like Sporting Lokeren and K. Beerschot VA.
The backroom team is bolstered by two seasoned equipment officers, Issah Amadou (formerly of Asante Kotoko) and Abdul Rahman Alhassan (formerly of Hearts of Oak), who bring a combined 53 years of experience.
