GCB Bank PLC has announced the appointment of Professor Joshua Alabi as its new Board Chairman, following the resignation of Mr. Daniel Kwaku Tweneboah Asirifi as Director and Chairman of the Board.
In a statement, the bank revealed that the Board approved Prof. Alabi’s nomination and appointment as an Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors.
The appointment takes effect immediately, subject to shareholder approval at the upcoming Annual General Meeting, as well as regulatory approvals from the Bank of Ghana and other authorities.
Prof. Joshua Alabi is a highly respected academic, administrator, and business strategist whose career spans more than three decades across academia, public service, and corporate leadership.
He previously served as the Chairman of HFC Bank, where he led the transformation of the institution into what is now known as Republic Bank. His leadership experience includes serving as:
- Chairman of the Board of Trustees for SSNIT (Social Security and National Insurance Trust)
- Chairman of the Accra Polytechnic Governing Council (now Accra Technical University)
- Chairman of the Ghana Book Development Council
In the field of education, Prof. Alabi served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where he played a transformative role in positioning UPSA as one of Ghana’s leading institutions.
Beyond academia, Prof. Alabi has contributed extensively to public service. He was a Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency and held the position of Minister of State for the Greater Accra and Northern Regions.
In sports administration, he has served as the General Secretary of GHALCA, a member of the GFA Management Board, and as Coordinator for the Black Stars, Ghana’s senior national football team.
Through his roles in governance, education, and sports, Prof. Alabi has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, successfully driving policy development, institutional reform, and organizational growth.
Commenting on his appointment, Prof. Alabi expressed his gratitude to the Board of Directors for entrusting him with the role.
“I am deeply honoured to lead GCB at this pivotal moment. Together with the Board and management, we will work tirelessly to strengthen GCB’s position as a leading financial institution in Ghana and beyond,” he stated.
As Chairman of the Board, Prof. Alabi will provide strategic oversight and guidance to GCB Bank, furthering its mission to deliver innovative financial solutions, enhance shareholder value, and contribute significantly to Ghana’s economic development.
