Erling Haaland capitalised on a costly mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to guide Manchester City to a 2-1 victory, propelling the reigning champions back into the Premier League’s top four.
The decisive moment came in the 61st minute when Sanchez, caught in no man’s land, failed to deal with Ederson’s long clearance. Haaland outmuscled Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, controlled the ball, and coolly chipped Sanchez for his 18th league goal of the season.
Phil Foden sealed the win three minutes from time, latching onto Haaland’s clever layoff to score his fifth goal in four games. The victory extended City’s unbeaten league run to six matches and marked a significant response following a shaky start.
Chelsea had taken an early lead in the third minute after City debutant Abdukodir Khusanov misjudged a header, gifting possession to Nicolas Jackson. The striker set up Noni Madueke for a simple tap-in. However, City equalized when Josko Gvardiol reacted quickly to finish a rebound after Sanchez denied Matheus Nunes.
Despite a lively opening, Chelsea faded as the game progressed and missed key opportunities, including a glaring miscommunication between Cole Palmer and Jackson that squandered a chance to double their lead.
City’s dominance after the equalizer, coupled with Sanchez’s costly blunder, underscored their superiority. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s winless streak against City now extends to 11 games, leaving Enzo Maresca’s side searching for solutions.
