The Upper West Regional branch of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has achieved a drop in recorded cases of road crashes, injuries, and deaths from 123 reported cases in 2023 to 113 cases in 2024, making a change of 20 per cent reduction.
The Regional Director of the Road Safety Authority, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Samad, revealed the number of vehicles involved in crashes also decreased from 224 in 2023 to 178 in 2024, a 20.5 per cent reduction.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, he said despite the total reduction, the number of fatal cases increased slightly from 33 in 2023 to 35 in 2024, representing a 6 per cent rise.
On a more positive note, the number of serious cases decreased from 70 in 2023 to 50 in 2024, while minor cases also declined from 40 in 2023 to 26 in 2024.
The statistics also showed a decline in the number of persons killed due to road crashes, from 44 in 2023 to 38 in 2024, representing a 13.6 per cent decrease.
Mr Mohammed added that, the number of persons injured decreased significantly from 183 in 2023 to 132 in 2024, a 27.8 per cent reduction.
Pedestrian knockdowns also decreased from 15 in 2023 to 11 in 2024, representing a 26.6 per cent decline.
While commending the various departments for their swift contribution and intervention in the reduction of cases, he attributed most of the incidents to pure negligence on the part of road users and the use of mobile phone while riding.
The Road Safety Authority’s efforts to improve road safety in the region appear to be yielding positive results, with significant reductions in crash cases, vehicles involved, and persons injured.
However, the slight increase in fatal cases remains a concern that requires continued attention and efforts to address.
