Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare has said that the action of public officers in acquiring assets does not mean they are looting.
However, he pointed out that the sudden acquisition of the properties is a red flag for looting.
“Of course, having assets is not equal to looting. But sudden assets acquisition in public office is a red flag for looting,” he wrote on Facebook.
His comments come at a time when President John Dramani Mahama said that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah will soon announce a date for all the appointees to declare their assets.
Mr Mahama said this after instructing all his appointees to declare their assets.
Speaking after swearing into office his ministers at the seat of government in Accra on Wednesday, January 22, he said ”I expect all of you to begin the process of declaring your assets. The Chief of Staff will announce the cutoff date by which time all eligible appointees should have deposited their assets declaration forms with the Auditor General. I wish all of you good luck in your duties, and I pledge to work with you in the future.”
During the swearing ceremony, President Mahama specifically told the Energy Minister, John Jinapor that Ghanaians expect nothing but a stable and efficient power supply.
“To you, John Jinapor, Ghanaians are looking for a stable and efficient power supply,” he said.
To the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, President Mahama told him that Ghanaians are expecting him to stabilise the Cedi and bring down inflation.
Mr Mahama also told him that the people expect him to ensure that the public national debt is brought to sustainable levels.
“To you Dr Ato Forson, Ghanaians expect you to reduce inflation, make life more comfortable. They expect you to bring the national public debt to sustainable levels, they are looking to you to stabilise our currency and to bring down inflation.”
The ministers sworn-in are Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson; Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor; and Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
The rests are Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, and Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture.
Meanwhile, the Appointments Committee continues its review of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees as part of efforts to finalize appointments and strengthen governance in the new administration.
