Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has lauded the contributions of the 8th Parliament, underscoring the achievement of the hung Parliament to Ghana’s democracy.
Bagbin while making a statement on the floor of the House on Thursday said the hung Parliament has been adjudged as the best ever parliament in the 4th Republic of Ghana.
Bagbin disagreed with critics who believes that the hung Parliament caused a dent on Ghana’s democracy.
“Let it not be said anywhere that the 8th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana did not perform well. Political scientists have adjudged the 8th Parliament as one of the best-hung parliaments in the world,” he said on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
According to Bagbin, in other jurisdictions like UK, US and Australia where hung Parliament has occurred, it ensured good governance and same has occurred in Ghana.
Bagbin clarified that the 8th Parliament is not the first to have experienced a hung Parliament as Ghana has once experienced same in 1979 but lasted for only 27 months.
Despite the many agitations and brouhaha experienced during the 8th Parliament, Alban Bagbin emphasised that the hung Parliament has made significant achievements and its success has been praised all over the world.
He urged Ghanaians to embrace the achievements of the 8th and hung parliament rather than condemn it.
“Ours lasted for four successful years and delivered a smooth transition of power from a party in opposition to a party in power. That is the record that is been analyzed over the world and we are being praised. Unfortunately, Ghanaians are rather condemning, they don’t see the achievements we’ve made and it is my duty to draw your attention to it,” he added.
