Substitute Darwin Nunez delivered a stoppage-time masterclass, scoring twice to secure Liverpool a dramatic 2-0 win over Brentford and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
With Liverpool’s wait for a first league win in 2025 looking set to continue, Nunez came to the rescue. In the 91st minute, the Uruguayan latched onto a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to score from close range, breaking the deadlock. Just two minutes later, he struck again, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack to double the lead in a crowded Brentford penalty area.
Liverpool dominated throughout, controlling possession and territory while creating several chances. Dominik Szoboszlai rattled the crossbar in the first half, and Luis Diaz squandered an unmarked header at the far post. Brentford, content to sit deep and absorb pressure, struggled to generate meaningful opportunities, leaving Bryan Mbeumo isolated in attack.
Nunez’s late intervention ensured Liverpool’s dominance was rewarded, maintaining their six-point advantage over Arsenal, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa later in the day. Liverpool also hold a game in hand over their title rivals.
The defeat leaves Brentford 11th in the standings, marking their third loss in four home games.
