EC accuses NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Organiser of leading chaos during Ablekuma North re-collation; calls for arrest

The Electoral Commission (EC) has accused supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of causing chaos and disrupting the seventh re-collation exercise of the Ablekuma North election results.

The re-collation exercise was halted on Friday, January 17 by some thugs who damaged several furniture and louvre blades at the EC’s regional office in Accra.

In a statement by the EC after the chaotic scene, the Commission said the disruption was led by the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NDC.

“It is instructive to note that, the supporters were led by the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Our staff also identified two men in military uniform without names in the company of the supporters,” EC said.

The Commission further called for the arrest of these invaders.

“We call on the Police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to book by identifying, arresting and prosecuting them. Video footages are available showing the faces of the perpetrators of these heinous acts,” EC noted.

Following a High Court order on 4th January 2025, the EC was instructed to continue the collation of results and declare the winners of four outstanding parliamentary elections.

The collation for Ablekuma North, the only remaining constituency, began on 8th January 2025 but was halted due to incomplete results from three polling stations.

The EC had scheduled the continuation of the collation for 17th January 2025 at 8:00 am.

However, based on intelligence reports, the Ghana Police Service advised postponing the exercise.

Despite this, the EC, in a statement issued on Friday, January 17, noted that the police had not enhanced security at the collation centers, leading to the invasion by party supporters.

The EC also appealed to the government to ensure adequate security for its operations, emphasising the need for a safe environment to complete the collation process and declare the results for Ablekuma North.

Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring the people of Ablekuma North have a Member of Parliament and called for the police’s cooperation to achieve this objective.
