Respiratory samples across all 16 regions have not shown signs of hMPV – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says Ghana has not recorded any sign of unusual respiratory pathogens such as the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China. 

The Service in a statement said it is closely monitoring the increase in acute respiratory infections, particularly those caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) currently spreading across China and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

In a press release, the Service noted that the outbreak is not due to a new virus, unlike the case of COVID-19. It clarified that hMPV-related respiratory infections typically increase during the winter season.

The GHS urged the public and healthcare professionals to remain vigilant and to adhere to preventive measures, including early detection to mitigate potential risks.

A statement signed by Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS stated, “the GHS held a Public Health Emergency Operation Centre meeting and received an update from the National Influenza Centre (NIC). Weekly samples from respiratory sites across all 16 regions of Ghana have not shown any unusual respiratory pathogens, including hMPV.”

The GHS noted that it is in collaboration with other agencies and partners has implemented measures aligned with WHO recommendations to ensure preparedness for any potential surge.

These include enhanced surveillance of acute respiratory diseases, expanded laboratory testing capabilities, regular assessment of the situation in the Northern Hemisphere and increased public awareness and education campaigns.

The GHS also underscored the need for preventive steps such as practicing good respiratory etiquette, maintaining proper hand hygiene, avoiding face-touching, wearing face masks when necessary, seeking early medical attention and adopting a healthy diet.

“The GHS assures the public that it is taking necessary steps to safeguard the health of Ghanaians and will provide regular updates on the situation,” the statement added.
