Frederick Acheampong denies reports of Kurt Okraku’s third-term ambition

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong has dismissed speculation that GFA President Kurt Okraku is planning to seek a third term.

Recent reports suggested the GFA’s Executive Council is considering amending statutes to allow Okraku to extend his tenure. However, in an interview with Akoma FM, Acheampong clarified that the matter has never been discussed at the council level.

“It never came up for discussion; we [Exco] never discussed going for a third term or any extended period,” Acheampong stated. “When elected to office, the focus should be on improving the mandate you were chosen to fulfil, not contemplating future terms.”

Acheampong, widely known as “Achie” in football circles, emphasized that leadership performance determines re-election. “Your performance will decide whether or not you are eligible for a second term. Thinking about a third term prematurely would be inappropriate.”

Kurt Okraku, who took office in 2019 following the tenure of the Normalization Committee after Kwesi Nyantakyi’s exit, has faced mixed reviews during his presidency. Prominent figures like Kudjoe Fianoo, George Afriyie, and Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer have publicly opposed the idea of a third term, should it arise.

As discussions around potential statute amendments gain attention, Ghanaian football stakeholders continue to evaluate Okraku’s leadership and its long-term impact on the sport.
